| The fifteenth I-Mop was going to be one of Watson's uniforms that I've been making for Second Life, but I don't feel I can post as a) it's not ready and b) I'm not really sure if it's right. Hopefully I can take some photographs on Saturday, if I can find the courage! Til then, here's a hastily sketched toon. ( Read more... ) | |

| ZIOXU GYRBIETFWIWKIKqL;!!!Niefsnjmefsogf!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! ... ! Poll #1485987 paranoia in a pinch [hit]
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 4 How wrong is it to stay on the pinch hitters list when you KNOW you won't ask for one just to see if your (or any of your friends') request rolls by? In waterier news, the highlights of the first day were three Peppermint Bass, a pair (unusual in itself) of Common Octopuses hanging out together just before twilight, two yet-to-be-named nudibranchs and an almost 3" juvie French Angel cleaning several Beaugregories, and a mess o' spawning Cocoa Damselfish. Did not take the camera today, but there will be fishspam soon. Breaking update: Make that one presumptive nudibranch yet-to-be IDed, and one Painted Elysia--a sea slug. But a pretty one.

| My spellcheck program is telling me that "memorize" is spelled with a "z" and not an "s" in British English, contrary to the usual practice. I've checked the OED, which unhelpfully gives me both spellings with no explanation.
So, British folks, should I believe spellcheck?
(Yes, I do try to follow British spelling conventions when writing in British fandoms. I find it kind of fun.)
ETA: Never mind. I just tested with the word "realize," and apparently my spellcheck allows "ize" even when I've set the language to British English. *headdesk* Luckily, I can catch any slips by searching for "ize" (unlike the or/our issue, where searching for the string "or" pulls up about every tenth word in the document).

| The "t" key on my laptop has just detached itself. I can still sort of type but getting a "t" is a huge annoying effort. I googled, and according to some (e.g., Yahoo Answers) I can just superglue the kay back on. Has anyone tried this? Will I ruin my laptop if I do?
I can't afford to replace either the keyboard or the laptop. (Computer is an aged Gateway, if that matters.)
ETA: I seem to have resolved the problem by removing the ick that was under the key and then pressing it back down hard. Hopefully it'll stay on, but I'd still value advice on the superglue option in case it doesn't.

| Doctor Who was on tonight. Here are some things what I thought about it: ( The Waters of Mars ) | |
|
| I'm writing about Zoe; specifically, I'm trying to play around with stuff in her backstory before she meets the Doctor, and I kinda need to know what the constraints are. Here's what I've figured out so far.
- She's ridiculously hard to pin down date-wise (Parkin devotes a good page of tl;dr footnotes in Ahistory to justifying his dating of Wheel in Space, and includes a whole raft of references that disagree with him completely). My plot doesn't work without going for the roughly-contemporary-with-us option, so that's what I'm doing.
I'm totally ignoring her being 15 in Wheel in Space according to the publicity material, 'cos that's not canon. And also Wendy Padbury's age makes it fine.
- In the Mind Robber, she sees her home city (unnamed, IIRC, and all space age and futuristic) -- her Wikipedia article contains a bizarre claim that she's spent her whole life on the Wheel, and someone has rightly citation-needed it. Is there a source for that idea?
- As well as being various astro- things, she's described as a "parapsychology librarian" in WiS, which has always struck me as weird, frankly. I'm leaning towards a somewhat About-Time-inspired interpretation of that title that her training involved some sort of use of vaguely psi-powers-y ideas of the type that were popular in the '60s to develop her abilities like her photographic memory and human-computer-i-ness.
Is there anything I've got wrong/missed out? Are there any non-telly sources that shed much light?

| It doesn't feel like much time has passed since Midsummer Tales ended here at metamorfic_moon, but the calendar tells us it's that time again: time for the fourth annual metamorfic_moon Christmas Advent. We've brought you Christmas Moons, Winter Wonderlands, and Pink Christmases; this year's theme is the Christmas Cracker Advent. For those of you who are scratching your heads, no, we're not talking about Ritz or Saltines. We're talking about the English Christmas tradition: A tube of cardboard wrapped in fancy paper and twisted at both ends. Inside the tube is a strip of paper coated in gunpowder, which snaps (cracks) when two people pull the cracker apart. Inside the tube, there would be a paper party hat, a small gift and a very childish joke on a little slip of paper. Crackers are pulled at Christmas dinner or lunch on 25th December Or, if you're talking about English wizards and witches (which we certainly are): Part of the Christmas feast celebration, similar to the Muggle version, but these are magical and contain very interesting and unusual things. When pulled, a wizard cracker goes off with a very loud blast like a cannon or a gunshot and emits a cloud of blue smoke, while from the inside explode whatever items the cracker contains. While we at metamorfic_moon can't supply Christmas crackers that contain Wizard's chess sets, grow-your-own-warts kits, witch's hats topped with stuffed vultures, non-explodable luminous balloons, or live white mice, we can guarantee that when you pull your crackers, you'll be showered with R/T artwork, drabbles, and fanfics -- which is all you want for Christmas anyway, isn't it? To get your Christmas cracker, you don't even have to worry about whether you've been naughty or nice this year. You just have to follow these easy steps: 1. Comment to this thread to sign up, indicating whether you would like to participate as an artist, a writer (this year, we're opening up the Advent to drabbles, so if shopping and gift wrapping don't allow you to do a full fic, you can still participate!), or both. You have until Monday, 30th November to do so. 2. On Tuesday, 1st December, one of Santa's attractive elves, who work part time as mods here (you can recognise us by our green stockings;)), will give you your Christmas cracker. (By replying to your comment with two prompts -- or four, if you're signing up to do art and fic.) 3. If you sign up to write, you may submit up to two pieces (two 1000+ words plus fics, two drabbles, or a fic and a drabble) that utilize one or both of your prompts. Whatever inspires you, any genre(s) you like. Artists may also submit two works of art. 4. The prompts! Those of you who did this last year will remember you had a word prompt associated with Christmas, and a quote from a well known book or a film associated with Christmas. This year you'll get a word again, along with an amusing/clever/witty quote (we solemnly swear your quotes will be better than the jokes you find in real Christmas crackers ;)). 5. Before you sign up, please read through the rules beneath the cut. In signing up to participate in The Christmas Cracker Advent, members acknowledge that they have read and understand the following rules and agree to abide by them. Don't skip over the rules — because Santa knows if you've been naughty this Advent! Besides, we all know you’re nice... ;) ( I Solemnly Swear I Have Clicked On This… )So all that remains is to hope that all of you want to join in and make this the most wonderful time of R/T year. If you do, just sign up below stating fic (no need to specify drabble) or art or both, and come join our Christmas fan feast!:D | |

| So, this morning, I woke up and took the dog out. I generally go out through the garage in case it's raining and because that's where the taking-the-dog-out shoes are. Since we were only going to be outside for five minutes at the most, I left the garage door open. Outside we go and it wasn't raining but the wind was howling madly. So we came back in rather quickly and, as we were walking into the garage...
A HUGE BLACK CAT LAUNCHED ITSELF AT US.
Seriously, it was like something out of a bad jumper-scare. I did not know they made spring-loaded cats in the real world. I suppose that it snuck inside our garage to get out of the wind and then we startled it, but still. Freaky, first thing in the morning.
And now I am awake. | |
